LIVE-IN CAREGIVER

Live-in caregivers are individuals who give care autonomously, without supervision, for children, elderly with disabilities in private homes where they also live during their work contract. If you are a foreign citizen outside Canada and you wish to work in Canada as a live-in caregiver, you need to obtain a work permit through the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP). You and your future employer also need to satisfy eligibility criteria determined by the LCP: The employer needs to obtain a positive LMIA and sign a written contract with you. In addition, you need to have completed the equivalent of Canadian secondary school education, to have a good knowledge of English or French, and to have been receiving a minimum of six (6) months of training or been working in a caregiving

To work in Canada as a live-in caregiver, you need to apply for a work permit at a visa office outside Canada and to be admissible to come to Canada. If you get the work permit through the LCP program, it will be temporary, and it can be renewed. After two (2) years of full-time working experience in Canada, you and your dependents may be eligible to obtain Permanent Residence in Canada. Note that changes to the Caregiver Program by the Canadian Government came into effect on November 30, 2014. If you received a positive LMIA before this date, different requirements may apply.
